How to Build Your Charlotte Internet Personal Home Page
Charlotte Internet's dial-up Internet access accounts each come with at least 5 megabytes of space on our servers for your personal web page. Our entire charlotteinternet.Com website only takes up about 2.5 megs of space. What could you do with all that space on the web?
First things first
Your homepage will be located at home.charlotteinternet.com/yourusername. You can go there now and check it out. If you have not uploaded any files there you will see a generic "under construction" page. The space is set up under the same username as your dial-in account. You'll use the same login name and password to access this space as you use to get online.
Build your Web site
There are two components in building a good web page. A page layout tool, and a graphics program. Web pages are written in a computer language called HTML. You can actually write HTML in a simple text editor like notepad and completely design a web site with no fancy layout tools at all. HTML is a lot to learn though so you'll probably want to start with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor to do that work for you. WYSIWYG Web Page Editors work a lot like Word Processors.
Get the Picture?
There is a ton of software out there for making images to put on the web. The kind of software you need really depends on how serious you are about building web sites. Professional image editing software can cost hundreds of dollars. However, there are much cheaper packages available for beginners.
Finally, there are a variety of websites that offer free web clipart. These sites contain directories of images that you can use on your website for free.
Upload Time!
So now you've got your page done and it's a pretty thing. You want everyone to see it so you have got to unload it to our servers. Most of the WYSIWYG editors above have some feature to automatically upload the files for you. We can't provide support for all those packages though, so you'll need to go through the program's built in help documentation to figure that one out. You can also place files into your personal web space with any FTP program. Your Login and Password for your web space is the same as your dail-in account. The location of your space will be home.charlotteinternet.com/yourusername.
Here are some popular FTP programs to help transfer files there.
Good Luck! Remember that your personal web space is for your personal use. If you need business hosting and design services please see our Business Services page to see what Charlotte Internet can do for you.
